Logansport Historic Preservation Commission

What Is the Historic Preservation Commission and Why Does It Matter?

Logansport is a Certified Local Government (CLG), a designation earned through a partnership with the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology and the National Park Service.

This means our city has met established state and federal standards for identifying, protecting, and preserving historic places.

The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is a mayor-appointed group of Logansport residents tasked with guiding these efforts. The commission works to:

  • Identify and document historic buildings, sites, and neighborhoods
  • Review proposed changes to designated historic properties
  • Support preservation efforts that maintain our community’s character
  • Promote awareness of local history

Why Preservation Matters

Historic preservation is more than saving old buildings. It’s about:

  • Protecting community identity
  • Encouraging thoughtful growth and redevelopment
  • Supporting local pride and heritage
  • Connecting past, present, and future

How This Affects You

You might interact with the commission if:

  • You own property in a historic district
  • Your property is historic, and you are interested in designating it
  • You are planning exterior changes to a designated historic structure
  • You’re interested in local history or preservation efforts

If any of the above, and you are a Logansport resident, please consider volunteering to serve on the HPC

Working Together

The commission carries out its responsibilities locally, in coordination with state and federal preservation programs, and often in collaboration with preservation organizations such as Indiana Landmarks.

We also welcome community input and participation, because preserving our history is a shared effort.

Please watch this site as we share about local preservation efforts, more information about our work, highlights of local historic places, and everything that can help our community better understand and appreciate its heritage.

Upcoming topics include:

  • “What makes a property historic?”
  • “What is a historic district?”
  • “Why would I want to designate my historic property?”
  • “Do I need approval for changes to my home?”
  • Running FAQs
  • Myth vs. fact
  • Spotlight on a local historic property
