What Is a Local Historic District and Why Does It Matter?

Many people have heard the term “historic district,” but fewer understand what it actually means or how it benefits a community.

A local historic district is an area officially recognized by a city or town for its historic, architectural, cultural, or community significance. These districts can include entire neighborhoods, downtown commercial areas, or even individual landmarks that help tell the story of a community’s past.

Unlike museums, historic districts are living places. People live, work, shop, worship, and conduct business in them every day. Historic district designation helps ensure that the character and features that make these places special are preserved for future generations.

How Are Historic Districts Created?

Historic districts typically begin with local residents who value their community’s heritage and want to protect it. Recommendations are reviewed by a local historic preservation commission and ultimately considered by elected officials through a public process before designation occurs.

More Than Old Buildings

Historic districts are not created simply because a building is old. Designation recognizes places that have architectural, cultural, social, economic, political, or engineering significance to the community.
